Improvisation Practise

IMPORTANT NOTE: In this part of the site the Key of each piece is quoted in Concert Pitch. For those of us who play Trumpets or saxophones or any other Transposing instruments we need to remember that when the Guitar or Keyboard are playing in A, we are playing in B (B flat players), G flat (E flat players) or E (F flat players)

By it's very nature improvisation means you can make it up yourself.

However some notes work better in combinations with others, for example if one person plays a C (concert pitch) and another plays a G (concert pitch) they sound nice together, but if the second player plays a C# (concert Pitch) not so easy on the ear.

To help us get going with improvisation a good place to start is the "Pentatonic Scale". It's much the same as the regular scales we play except we leave out the 2nd and 6th notes. As a result the notes that are left work very well with each other in lots of different combinations, like playing the black notes only on the Piano. In fact the black notes of the Piano make up E flat Minor Pentatonic.
So because we have to start somewhere lets pic. . . . .
